Flour weight depends on how you fill the cup. Spooning it in and leveling gives a lighter cup than scooping from the bag, and sifting makes it lighter still. If a recipe lists grams, weigh it.

Leaveners and flavorings are left out of this chart because recipes use them by the teaspoon; the converter handles them.

Measuring a metric recipe with cups

Gram amounts rarely land on a whole cup, so the converter breaks the result into the cups and spoons in a standard US set: 1, ¾, ⅔, ½, ⅓ and ¼ cup, then tablespoons and teaspoons. Teaspoons are rounded to the nearest ¼, which is closer than anyone can level a cup by hand.

For flour, spoon it into the cup and level it; scooping packs it down and gives you more than the recipe meant. Small differences matter most in cakes and least in cookies and breads.

Questions bakers ask

How do you convert grams to cups?

Divide the grams by the weight of one cup of that ingredient. One cup of all-purpose flour weighs 125 g, so 250 g is 2 cups. Because every ingredient has a different weight per cup, you need to know the ingredient to convert.

How many cups is 100 grams of flour?

100 g of all-purpose flour is 0.8 cups, which you can measure as ¾ cup + 2½ tsp.

How many cups is 200 grams of sugar?

200 g of granulated sugar is exactly 1 cup. 200 g of packed brown sugar is ¾ cup + 2 tbsp + 1¾ tsp.

How many cups is 250 grams of butter?

250 g of butter, a common European block, is 1.1 cups: 1 cup + 1 tbsp + 2 tsp, or about 2¼ US sticks.

How many cups is 1 kg of flour?

1 kg of all-purpose flour is 8 US cups.
