Metric butter in sticks and tablespoons
Butter outside the US is sold by weight, often in 250 g blocks. These are the US measures for common metric amounts.
| Grams | Sticks | Cups | Tablespoons |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 g | 0.44 | 0.22 | 3.5 |
| 100 g | 0.88 | 0.44 | 7.1 |
| 125 g | 1.1 | 0.55 | 8.8 |
| 200 g | 1.76 | 0.88 | 14.1 |
| 250 g | 2.2 | 1.1 | 17.6 |
| 500 g | 4.41 | 2.2 | 35.3 |
Measuring butter without a scale
Use the tablespoon marks printed on the wrapper: each stick is divided into 8. For half a tablespoon, cut a mark in half. If your butter came in a block without marks, pack softened butter into a dry measuring cup with a spatula, pressing out air pockets, then level the top.
Salted and unsalted butter weigh the same. If a recipe calls for unsalted butter and you only have salted, reduce the added salt by about ¼ teaspoon per stick.
Questions bakers ask
How many sticks of butter are in a cup?
Two. One US stick is ½ cup, so 1 cup of butter is 2 sticks, 16 tablespoons or 8 oz (227 g).
How many tablespoons are in a stick of butter?
Eight. The paper wrapper on a US stick is marked in tablespoons, so you can cut off exactly what you need.
How many grams is a stick of butter?
A US stick of butter weighs 4 oz, which is 113.4 g. Recipes usually round it to 113 g or 115 g.
How many sticks is 250 g of butter?
250 g, the standard European block, is 2.2 US sticks: two sticks plus about 1.6 tablespoons.
Is a pound of butter 4 sticks?
Yes. A 1 lb box of US butter holds four 4 oz sticks, which is 2 cups.
Does melted butter measure the same as solid butter?
By weight, yes: 113 g of butter is 113 g whether it is cold, soft or melted. By volume it is close enough for baking: a melted stick fills about ½ cup. Whipped butter is different, because it has air beaten in; weigh it or use stick butter.
